Description
These are two Steamer Ducks and their babies that I photographed on a small rock island just of the coast of Chiloe Island, Chile. Their are four species of Steamer Ducks. Three of the species do not fly. They use their wings in unison with their feet to paddle through the water faster. Thus the name Steamer Ducks since their wing flapping reminded people of the side paddles of the old steam ships. The ducks are aggressive when protecting themselves and their young. Even the Flying Steamer Ducks, the only species that does fly, rarely takes to the air.
