Description
This is the photograph of a Tyrannosaurus Rex skull. The Greek translation of Tyrannosaurus Rex is King of the Tyrant Lizards. T-Rex is a very popular dinosaur due extensive media exposure. In fact, many dinosaurs depicted in movies have been misidentified as T-Rex because they have some similar characteristics. One such specimen, Allosauraus predates T-Rex by over 80 million years. This dinosaur is featured in several movies; however, most people (including myself) thought it was simply T-Rex. Some of the movies are The Lost World, The Beast of Hollow Mountain, The Valley of Gwangi, Walking with the Dinosaurs, Planet Dinosaur, and Dinosaur Revolution.
Tyrannosaurus Rex remains the undisputed king of the carnivore dinosaurs to date. The King can reach 13 feet at the hips, have an overall 40-foot length and weigh a whopping 9 tons. The T-Rex is armed with teeth designed to rip apart its prey and a jaw that can exert 12,814 Lbs of crushing pressure. It can achieve speeds up to 25 MPH when chasing prey. It ate herbivores (plant eaters), other carnivores (meat eaters), and even its own species according to some studies.
The earlier relatives of T-Rex were not always so large. Many were much smaller, however, they were always the largest carnivores in their respective eco-system. T-Rex remained at the top of the food chain during the Upper Cretaceous Period, 67-65 Million years ago. It was the last of the great carnivores.
